What is a Weed Wrangle? If you have received a letter from WildOnes because your property is adjacent to an area where we are working, this is the place to find answers about Weed Wrangles.
As stated on the Weed Wrangle website, “a Weed Wrangle® is a one-day, area-wide, volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from non-native invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants. Supervised by an expert in invasive weed management, Weed Wrangle® volunteers learn, practice and begin a habit of maintaining an area free of non-native invasive plants and encourage replanting with natives in removal areas. By engaging our neighbors and challenging them to take action in their own spaces, we hope to create a movement that will have the greatest impact on the invasive plant population.”
As WildOnes North Alabama members and supporters, our goal is to bring this event to Huntsville and surrounding communities to rescue our public parks and preserves from invasive vegetation and, critically, to teach residents how to identify and control the worst invasive species in our region. Once you’ve experienced a Weed Wrangle, you’ll be removing all the English Ivy, Bush Honeysuckle, Nandina, Mahonia, Bradford Pear, Vinca, Winter Creeper, Liriope and Tree of Heaven growing in your yard. While the journey to get these invaders under control is a long and arduous one, it’s one on which we must embark together.
If you’d like to get involved and support future Weed Wrangles, please reach out to us at [email protected] with the subject line “Weed Wrangle.” We encourage participation in WildOnes Wrangles from the general public.
WildOnes’ first Weed Wrangle was hosted on the Mountain Gap Trail in S. Huntsville in November 2024 and was a lot of fun for all involved. Join us to take out your frustrations on invasive vegetation in the near future!
